A PLACE FOR YOUR PRAYERS

The Western Wall

The Western Wall, located at the heart of Jerusalem, the holy city, is considered to be one of
the most important monuments of the Jewish religion, as well as a sacred site that outlasted
the damages off time and conquest. Eighteen meters high (and goes deep underground), the
Western Wall is the last standing remnant of the great Jewish temple, also referred to as the
house of God.
The Western Wall was a part of the great wall surrounding the temple mount and today it’s
the last and only original (yet renovated) part of the great temple complex. Even though it’s
a part of the outer wall that surrounded the Temple complex, the Western Wall has a unique
origin that might explain its virtues and why it has become such an important place of prayer
and worship.
The Origin of the Western Wall
According to Jewish tradition and belief, seven stones stand at the basis of the Western
Wall, all placed by key men from our world’s history. The first stone was placed by Adam,
the very first man, while the second stone was placed by Abraham, the first Jewish man who
recognized the one and only God. The third, fourth and fifth stones were placed by Yitzhak
(Isaac), Jacob, and Josef. And the last two stones on which the Western Wall stands upon
were placed by King David and his son, King Solomon.
The Survival of the Western Wall
While the entire great temple was destroyed by the Roman Empire, the Western Wall had
miraculously survived. When the evil Titus had come to destroy the Western Wall, an echo
called out to him from the sky, saying: “turn away evil man, I have allowed you take down all
my other walls, but this one will stand.” And the Western Wall still stands to this day.
